Hair Loss and Its Causes

03:40

Loss of hair everyday is a normal part of the growth cycle of hair. Remember that 10% of our hair is in a resting phase, which would usually fall every 2 or 3 months. Thinning of hair gets noticed when the loss is over the normal shedding limits. These include: There are several factor which could cause hair loss. Alopecia areata: Affecting both men and women, the loss is rapid. This is usually caused by an immunity disorder when the intrinsic white cells attack the hair follicles. Alopecia Totalis happens with complete loss of scalp hair. Infrequently a condition called alopecia universals occurs where hair is lost from the entire body.

Genetic factors: This can cause male pattern baldness which affects nearly 25% of men by age 30. It is primarily genetic but is also due to the male hormone testosterone. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is produced with the conversion of testosterone which either hampers or stops growth and produces weak and short hair. Men without testosterone would never have male pattern baldness.

Skin diseases: this can affect the scalp and be the reason for hair loss. Some of the skin diseases include dandruff or seborrhea dermatitis, psoriasis, scalp fungus such as ringworm and tinea captis.

Sudden illness or fever: hair can come off in large tufts after an illness or fever. This is a temporary condition.
Other causes of hair loss include; Childbirth, The Menopause, Chemotherapy, Radiation Therapy and Age. Over and above these main reasons, there are other reasons too.

Hair loss can be treated when you can stop hair fall and promote re-growth. Some of the natural means for hair loss treatment include:

1. Vitamins A, B, C and E are excellent for promoting new hair growth. These vitamins help to provide sebum, good blood circulation to the scalp by increasing oxygen absorption and collagen.

2. Importance of scalp care: Remember to massage your scalp regularly with herbal oils like olive oil, jojoba oil, amla oil. These include: essential oils of thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedar wood.

3. Avoid scalp abuse: Stop daily use of harmful chemical shampoos and blow drying. Chemical treatments like coloring as well as straightening damage hair and scalp. Your hair and scalp can get damaged as hair turns brittle and dry when you wash it with hot water daily.

4. Herbal therapy: Powders of amla, shikakai, henna and ritha as shampoo and conditioner can be effective therapy options. It is also a powerful anti-oxidant. It has a natural low pH. After this use henna as a natural conditioner.

5. Lead a stress free life: To do this, do exercises and meditation. Remember stress initiates hair loss. Quit smoking; the nicotine in cigarettes constricts blood vessels and decreases blood flow to the scalp. To avoid damage to the scalp avoid UV rays from sun exposure.
