   Heartburn is very common -- and very unpleasant. It's triggered when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. It can make you feel as though someone has lit a small bonfire in your chest, and it's burning its way up to your neck.

You're probably well aware that medications can help calm the burn, but natural heartburn remedies and lifestyle changes may be another way to get relief.

One commonly used "natural" heartburn remedy is calcium. It's also the active ingredient in many over-the-counter antacids.

If you find yourself popping antacids like candy and you're having heartburn more than a couple of times a week, or if you are using antacids for longer than two weeks, it's time to see the doctor. You may have a condition called GERD -- gastroesophageal reflux disease. Frequent heartburn can lead to long-term problems. It can cause inflammation and strictures in your esophagus.  In rare cases, it may even lead to cancer. But stopping the acid reflux can help prevent complications in the future.

Here is a rundown of some other commonly used home remedies for heartburn, and the evidence for their effectiveness:

Baking Soda

The easiest and best way to get relief from heartburn is sodium bicarbonate or in simple terms baking soda. Just mix a teaspoon of baking soda and a few drops of lemon juice in a glass of water and drink it. Being a natural antacid, baking soda will start working within minutes and will give you instant relief from heartburn pain. But this home remedy is not recommended for those who suffer from heartburn regularly.

Aloe Vera Juice

The juice extracted from the aloe vera plant is a popular home remedy to treat the problem of heartburn. When Aloe vera juice is taken it reduces inflammation and heals the intestinal tract, thus controlling heartburn. It is recommended to drink half a cup of Aloe vera juice before eating a meal. Do not drink too much Aloe vera juice in a day as it can cause diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Ginger

Fresh ginger is also a popular way to get relief from heartburn. Ginger can be helpful in two ways – it can absorb acid from the stomach and offer nerve-calming effects. You can use ginger for preparing food, eat raw ginger pieces or drink ginger tea. To make ginger tea add a teaspoon of freshly grated ginger to one cup of boiling water, steep for a few minutes and then drink it. This natural herb can be consumed regularly to stop the problem of heartburn from recurring.

Cabbage Juice

Cabbage can give you much relief from heartburn pain. The juice of cabbage have natural anti-inflammatory properties that can give relief from different kinds of digestive problems including heartburn. Make fresh cabbage juice with the help of a blender or juicer and add a pinch of salt and pepper for flavor. Drink this fresh juice in the morning on empty stomach. Along with cabbage juice, you can also try the juices of vegetables like carrots, cucumbers, radishes, or beets to reduce the formation of acid in the stomach.

Almonds

To keep the symptoms of heartburn under control, try to include almonds in your diet. Try to eat three to four almonds immediately after every single meal or snack. Depending upon your preference level you can take raw, roasted or salted almonds. No matter how you want to eat the almonds, you need to chew it thoroughly till it is just flour. This way almond oil and juice will be extracted which will calm the acid formed in the stomach.

Vinegar

Drinking a tablespoon of vinegar will close the esophagus, thus preventing acid from rising and will give you instant relief from heartburn. Of all the different types of vinegar it is the apple cider vinegar that works best in case of heartburn. Add one or two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of drinking water and try to drink this solution before each meal.

Milk

Drinking a large glass of chilled milk at the first sign of heartburn, if the symptoms are not too strong will give you huge relief. Milk will relax the valve between the stomach and esophagus thus helping you in heartburn. But if you suffer from heartburn regularly, then this home remedy will not give you much relief. Along with milk, you can also take other kind of dairy products also.

When slippery elm is consumed it thickens the layer of mucous lining the stomach, reducing the formation of acid inside the stomach. Take one teaspoon of slippery elm in powder form and add it to a cup of hot water. Try to drink this healthy solution throughout the day until you get relief from heartburn completely.

Marshmallow Root

Marshmallow root is one of the oldest natural treatments for heartburn. When consumed, marshmallow root coats and protects the mucous membranes of the esophagus, thus bringing you relief from different symptoms of heartburn. Just add a teaspoon of powdered marshmallow root into one cup of warm water and sip it several times a day.

Fennel Seeds
