What is Viniyoga Therapy ?

00:01
Viniyoga is an approach to yoga in which a teacher works individually with each student and creates a yoga program based on various factors such as age, health, physical condition and previous or current injuries. Viniyoga aims to teach a person yoga practice based on his or her present needs.

How is viniyoga different from other yoga styles?
  • Viniyoga is different from other forms of yoga in the following ways;
  • Repetition in and out of postures and holding each posture
  • Emphasis on function over form
  • Focus on breathing and the adaptation of breathing patterns to yield different effects
  • Sequence creation with varying length and intensity to suit the requirements of each practice
Viniyoga Postures:

Given below is a viniyoga posture for scoliosis, a very common condition characterized by curving of the spine.

Half Pyramid Pose (Ardha Parsvottanasana)

Steps :
  • Stand with your left foot in front. Keep your right foot turned slightly outwards and place your right arm over your head. Keep your left arm folded at your back.
  • Exhale, bend forward, flex your left knee and lower your chest towards your left thigh. Bring your right hand towards your left foot.
  • Inhale, lift your chest and right arm until your upper body is parallel to the floor.
  • Exhale and resume forward bending position
  • Inhale and resume starting position
Viniyoga Therapy:

Those who are experiencing diminished energy in the body or mind may benefit from customized viniyoga practice. This type of yoga practice is even suitable for those who have been injured or those recovering from surgery. A viniyoga teacher will help to plan a yoga program that meets individual requirements. Viniyoga is known to be especially helpful for those who suffer from back pain. It helps to loosen the back muscles and brings balance to the spine. A viniyoga sequence is designed as a therapeutic practice for specific health problems.
